Wik Castle (Viks Slott)

DOCUMENTED: Wiks / Viks slott at Viks Mur 29, Balingsta socken, Uppsala municipality (Uppland), on Lårstaviken (Ekoln / Lake Mälaren), ~20 km SW of Uppsala. Owned by Region Uppsala since 1923 (former landsting); folk high school, hotel/conference, restaurant/café; byggnadsminne (KML; commonly 1982). Map note: verified coordinates ~59.736 N, 17.462 E (Balingsta shoreline) — not central Uppsala. EARLY ESTATE: Lagman Israel Andreasson (And), d. 1289. Vik recorded 1303 for Ramborg Israelsdotter (And) and 1315 for husband Arvid Gustavsson (Sparre av Vik), killed at Nyköpings gästabud 1317. Inheritance via Sparre/Bielke; many women as owners. STONE CASTLE: Late 1400s enkelhusborg associated with Klaus Nilsson / Katarina Stensdotter till Wik / Nils Klausson (Sparre av Ellinge) — grey-stone lower levels, monk-bond brick above, deep undercrofts. WAR: Peder Swart — Gustav Vasa besieged Vik 1521 for more than a year (defender Knut Nilsson). REBUILDS: Mid-1600s Gustaf Horn / Sigrid Bielke works (stair, baroque portal); Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander 1858–1860 gave present exterior and Riddarsalen. Continuous inheritance until sale 1912; Region 1923. Park: baroque and English traces; bathing shore. ANNA VON DER GRÜNAU (documented person; death narrative): German-born court lady (née von der Grünau), married Berndt Didrik Mörner 1605, widow 1610, connected to Wik in the early 1600s. Family/local chronicle tradition holds she died winter 1612 travelling over Mälaren ice toward Skokloster (friend Margareta Wrangel) when the sledge broke through — Region Uppsala summarises she was found "dead and frozen." Treat chronicle drowning as historical tradition; treat witch-refusal-to-rescue embellishments and the subsequent ghost as folklore (see legend). FOLKLORE — THE WHITE LADY / ANNA VON DER GRÜNAU (Region Uppsala heritage point "Den vita frun på Wik"): One of Wik's best-known ghosts — a white-clad woman in mist on the castle, courtyard and park, sometimes leaving wet footprints; winter nights, desperate cries from the lake. Tradition identifies her with Anna von der Grünau after the 1612 ice accident. Embellished tellings add that onlookers mistook her floating skirts for witchcraft and fled; folklore also says she seeks her children. Haunted Sweden separates the chronicle drowning tradition from apparition claims. FOLKLORE — FRU RAMBORG: Visit Sweden and local lore — when the castle clock strikes thirteen her pale face appears in a tower window; troll-treasure tale of wealth; digital heritage app presents her as lingering guardian. Historical Ramborg Israelsdotter (early 1300s; Västeråker copper grave slab) is real — clock-thirteen sightings are folklore.
