Sundbyholm Castle

DOCUMENTED: Sundbyholms slott is a stone castle on a Mälaren headland in Eskilstuna municipality (Södermanland), within the Sundbyholm outdoor/nature conservation area (Sundbyholm nature conservation area 1987; nearby Sundbyholmsåsen reserve). VIKING AGE LANDSCAPE: Settlement long before the castle; ~1 km southeast lies Sigurdsristningen (Ramsund carving) — one of Sweden's foremost runic monuments (11th century), depicting the Sigurd Fafnisbane legend and a bridge-building inscription over Ramsundet (Eskilstuna kommun / Länsstyrelsen Södermanland). MEDIEVAL: In the Middle Ages Sundbyholm was monastic estate (klostergods) belonging to Eskilstuna Johanniterkloster. The Johannite order established itself in Eskilstuna around 1170 at Eskil's burial church — the monastery was in Eskilstuna; Sundbyholm was estate land of that house, not a separate monastery founded on this peninsula in 1170. Reformation 1527: Gustav Vasa seized the property for the crown (kungsgård). GYLLENHIELM CASTLE: 1597 Duke Karl (later Charles IX) donated the estate to his illegitimate son Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm (later riksamiral; half-brother of Gustav II Adolf; grandson of Gustav Vasa). 1615 Kristina Ribbing received Sundbyholm as morning gift. During Gyllenhielm's ~12-year captivity in Poland under cousin Sigismund, the smaller Hertighuset served as manor house. After return he built a representative stone castle 1639–1648 (year 1648 on the northeast portal); he died 1650; widow Kristina moved to Sundbyholm. 1629 he founded Sundby / Gyllenhielmska skolan at his own expense — regarded as Sweden's first folkskola, operating until 1987. After Gyllenhielm (no heir) Seved Bååt raised the house to three storeys (appearance in Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna). Reduktion returned the estate to the crown 1699; 18 crown tenants until 1939. FIRE 1774: Severe fire on/around Christmas Eve 1774 under tenant Captain Adam Jakob von Schoting — sparks from chimneys ignited a newly tarred shingle roof; combustible interiors destroyed, some inner walls collapsed (hotel archive details: wife Brita Liljehök at home; staff discovered fire in attic/roof). Without funds for full rebuild the ruin served as barn and magazine for ~150 years. MODERN: Eskilstuna bought 1939; building-historical survey then restoration 1952–53 as conference venue — 17th-century cellars retained; upper floors adapted (large Riddarsalen partly due to not restoring original room plan). Today hotel (~117 rooms in estate buildings — official site: no overnight rooms inside the castle itself), restaurant, banquets, conference; Green Key. Prince Eugén painted Det gamla slottet here in 1893. DARK HISTORY (documented only): Gyllenhielm's long POW imprisonment; childless death; reduktion loss; 1774 catastrophe and century-and-a-half of degradation; Schoting-era hardship — not proof of hauntings. Hotel folklore also mentions Count Nils August Cronstedt (tenant after 1779; sentenced for insubordination, death sentence commuted by Gustav III to life imprisonment, later freed by Duke Karl) — his later misfortunes are historical; linking him to the hooded cellar figure is speculation.

FOLKLORE & HOTEL TRADITION (not scientifically verified): Sundbyholms Slott publishes an official ghosts page and is covered in Ekuriren's Sörmländska spöken series. Staff and guests report a constant feeling of presence; doors opening/closing; keys rattling in empty rooms; handles pressed down alone — especially when new staff start. A peaceful haunting is sometimes linked to Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm (anecdotes of him selling cannons to feed his men) — if the ghost is Gyllenhielm, hotel lore says it is friendly. Medium Jörgen Gustavsson visited autumn 2008; staff emphasize his closing line: "Here there are only kind ghosts" (medium claim, not evidence). WITNESS REPORTS (hotel / press — anecdotal): Restaurant manager Maria's account after a Viking dinner: locked the castle, went to the wine cellar, heard footsteps thought to be the toastmaster, called twice with no answer, then saw a tall dark figure entirely in black with a hood hiding the face walk through the vault, notice her, pass into another room — empty when followed, only a watched feeling. Hotel site also wonders whether the male cellar figure could be Count Cronstedt (see history — speculative). Guests in the Herrgård reported dragging sounds and creaking stairs when they believed themselves alone (summer 2007) — the hotel itself later notes the receptionist realised late drop-in guests had occupied the suite above (natural explanation for that anecdote).
