Häringe Castle

DOCUMENTED: Häringe is a historic säteri in Västerhaninge socken, Haninge municipality (Södertörn), beside Landfjärden within Häringe–Hammersta nature reserve. EARLY LAYERS: Iron Age burial ground south of the castle; runestone Sö 239 at the approach. Hotel and popular histories speak of Viking Sote claiming the peninsula ~year 1000 and of a battle at Sotaskär (Snorri / Olav tradition) — Wikipedia notes this as a disputed late tradition. The ruin called Sotens (Sotes) borg by Landfjärden is popularly tied to that story but is archaeologically much younger (likely 1500s fabric, possibly linked to Kristina Åkesdotter's era). MEDIEVAL–VASA: Estate held by Strängnäs bishopric, Sten Sture heirs, then contested by Gustav Vasa (naval yard/base claims mid-1520s). Gustav II Adolf held the inherited estate and in 1625/1628 transferred it to Field Marshal Gustaf Horn. HORN CASTLE: Horn replaced an older wooden house on the height with the present stone main building, finished 1657 (works 1651–1657); Sjöflygeln incorporates part of the earlier structure. Original exterior in German–Dutch late Renaissance; later façade simplification; Karolinska character strengthened under Fabian Löwen in the 1770s. DOCUMENTED FAMILY TRAGEDY: Horn's wife Kristina Oxenstierna was at Häringe in 1630 and bore son Axel, who died the following year (infant death on record — not itself a paranormal claim). After Horn's death in 1657 the estate passed to daughter Agneta Horn, then through Kruus, Wrede, Lillie and De la Gardie lines to Fabian Löwen (1769+) and the Löwen/Trolle-Löwen family into the 20th century. MODERN: Torsten Kreuger bought 1929 — refrigerators, early outdoor pool, bowling, and an underground tunnel between Sjöflygeln and the main house (1930s; built so guests need not cross the yard in rain — documented hotel history, not a medieval escape route). After Kreuger crash, Axel & Marguerite Wenner-Gren owned from 1934; lavish interiors, park statues, celebrity guests; both buried under a memorial stone near the eastern wing. Later emptied of movables; Olle & Margit Hartwig restored furnishings from the 1970s; hotel/conference under later owners; since 2017 Vesko Mijac / family hotel–restaurant–conference operation with wing renovations. DARK HISTORY CONTEXT: Temporary estate lock-up (fängelsehåla) for alleged local offenders awaiting the länsman (hotel presentation); noble debts, reduktion disputes, Kreuger fraud scandal, wartime-era ownership wealth and later emptying of the house — historical drama, not automatic proof of hauntings.

FOLKLORE & HOTEL TRADITION (not scientifically verified): Häringe markets a long haunted reputation and hosts official Spökafton evenings — drinks in Stensalen, three-course dinner with ghost stories, guided walk with "the Last Baron" through park and buildings (incl. underground passage storytelling), overnight and breakfast. The castle openly presents unexplained staff/guest experiences without guaranteeing a sighting. NAMED LORE: Little Axel (Gustaf Horn's son) — folklore places a child spirit in Sjöflygeln upper floors: feeling watched, bed visits, children's crying; hotel/ghost-tourism texts often say he froze to death at about two — separate the documented infant death (1630–31) from later ghost embellishment. Agneta Wrede and other noble women appear in ghost roundups. Marguerite Wenner-Gren — said to still watch over the house in a red velvet dressing gown (ironic folklore given claims she feared ghosts in life). Monk and other figures appear in some popular lists. WITNESS REPORTS (anecdotal): shadow figures; footsteps in empty corridors; cold spots; unexplained voices; watched feeling (staff reluctant to enter Sjöflygeln alone); tunnel and cellar unease.
