History

Brahehus was commissioned in 1637 by Count Per Brahe the Younger as a dower house for his wife, Kristina Katarina Stenbock. She died in 1650 before the castle was fully completed. In 1708, a major fire spread from nearby Uppgränna and destroyed the castle, leaving the exposed ruins seen today.

Legends

Local folklore speaks of a sorrowful female presence seen among the stone walls on misty nights, sometimes linked to the countess who never lived in the castle. The exposed ruins, empty windows and fog from Lake Vättern have made Brahehus a popular setting for ghost stories and paranormal atmosphere.
