Överås Manor

DOCUMENTED: Överås at Danska Vägen 20 in Göteborg (Örgryte/Bö) is a palatial manor built in the first half of the 1860s — sources cite completion around 1861–1865 — for James J. Dickson (James Dickson d.y.), of the Scottish-origin Dickson merchant family central to Gothenburg's industrial and philanthropic history. Architect V. Bulnois won James Dickson's competition; builder A. Krüger executed an English-influenced Italian Renaissance villa described by heritage staff as a 'pearl' among the city's merchant palaces. Earlier structures on the plot included a 1770s timber house; the estate name and lands have deeper roots (local history notes settlement and conflict in the Älvsborg region from the 1500s onward). The Dicksons hosted grand society events; Robert Dickson later subdivided land for Örgryte trädgårdsstad (1906). The city acquired the property around 1907 but could not use it for civic receptions because the will forbade alcohol on site. From 1923 the building served the Methodist Church's theological seminary (courses began 16 February 1924); pastoral training continued for decades. Later uses include Gothia Academy offices, event hire via Överås Slott AB (weddings and functions), and planned care-housing extensions (Wallenstam purchase, 2017).
