Färna Manor

DOCUMENTED: Färna Herrgård is a yellow-white plastered timber manor in Gunnilbo socken, Skinnskatteberg municipality (Västmanland), between Norrsjön and Lillsjön within the Färna bruksmiljö (Ekomuseum Bergslagen / Kulturarv Västmanland). PLACE-NAME: Fegernæ from 1467; settlement from at least the 1500s. IRONWORKS: Crown hammer with two hearths securely attested 1607; granted 1617 by Gustav II Adolf to Halfvar Olsson. True expansion under entrepreneur widow Edla Widiksdotter (widow of kamrer Abrahamsson) 1632–40; 1641 privilege for 1,200 skeppund bar iron. Later Abraham Momma (Reenstierna) and brother Jakob added hammers, anchor forge (1678), roof-plate hammer (1685); Momma pledged Färna to Claes Wilckens — Wilckens family ran the works 1692–1789. By 1737: steel works with burning furnace, plate hammer, three bar hammers. JACOB RAMSELL: Bookkeeper/manager from 1742 (poor background, self-taught in mining); married Eva Margareta Wilckens despite brother Hindrich's opposition; sole owner after Hindrich's death 1767; expanded with Bockhammar, Trummelsberg etc.; childless couple founded Färna och Bockhammars fideikommiss 1789 (then Sweden's largest by area) for charcoal forest. Ramsell built the first manor 1776; wings ~1800. VON HERMANSSON: After inheritance dispute early 1800s / from 1833 Count Carl Johan von Hermansson (via Ramsell sister Carolina) introduced Lancashire forging at Färna; remodelled manor to present appearance 1857. Son Carl Fredrik enlarged the complex (~45,000 ha by early 1880s; mines in Norberg, Dalarna, Schisshyttan etc.). Fideikommiss wound up 1907; works sold (Baron Johan Nordenfalk then Ramnäs); iron production concentrated then ceased ~1930 (hotel/Wikipedia: last hammer blows 1920s; hotel: closed 1930). Only foundation walls of production plants remain. Domänverket/Assi Domän later; WWII Norwegian police-troop camp (~1,200) and brief postwar Jewish refugee women on site (hotel history). Private Engström ownership from 1994 — hotel, conference, spa. MAUSOLEUM: Carl Fredrik von Hermansson began 1904 a private slag-stone mausoleum south of the manor overlooking Lillsjön — architect professor Lars Israel Wahlman (also Engelbrektskyrkan); finished ~1905; he died 1906; urn later moved to Gunnilbo kyrkogård. Declared byggnadsminne by Länsstyrelsen Västmanland 2015 — rare private mausoleum type nationally. Lusthus with paintings between manor and mausoleum. DARK HISTORY (documented / clearly labelled): Dangerous heat, hammers and forge labour inherent to Bergslagen ironworks; extreme contrast between manor life and workers; economic collapse and unemployment when smelting ended. Ekomuseum recounts a LEGEND that despotic Carl Johan proposed executing infirm workers and that smiths forged a neck collar onto him — present as folklore/legend, not proven parliamentary fact. Do not invent named industrial accidents or epidemics without archival citation.

FOLKLORE & LOCAL PRESS (not scientifically verified): Fagersta-Posten / Bbl/AT (part of a northern Västmanland ghost series) report that owner Wenche Engström has for many years heard guest accounts that Färna is "a little haunted," especially in the southern wing (Södra flygeln — conference rooms and upstairs guest rooms): a coachman (kusken) said to walk about, close doors, and tuck overnight guests into bed. Spa/massage-room talk of an "extra guest" appears in the same popular coverage — anecdotal. FEMALE APPARITIONS / GENERAL MANOR MOTIFS: Broader guest/staff talk of footsteps in empty rooms, doors, cold spots and a watched feeling occurs in informal storytelling; treat as unverified unless sourced. MAUSOLEUM: Atmospheric meditation/wedding site in heritage coverage — rich mood and death symbolism, but not a published named haunting in the sources used here; respect as memorial architecture. IRONWORKS LEGENDS: Ekomuseum's Carl Johan neck-collar / execution-proposal story is explicitly legendary worker resistance folklore against a harsh ironmaster image — keep separate from documented Lancashire modernisation and 1857 rebuild.
